SYNOPSIS / SOME SONGS ARE WRITTEN. OTHERS HAVE TO BE LIVED.
the concept
In 1968, Johnny Cash walked into Folsom Prison and gave one of the most unforgettable performances in American music history. Sixty years later, his son, John Carter Cash, returns to those same walls with his wife, Ana Cristina Cash, carrying a legacy that was never just about the music. It was about the people who needed to be heard.
Return to Folsom follows John Carter and Ana as they bring together a new generation of outlaw songwriters and incarcerated men to create original music rooted in their experiences. Through conversations, collaboration and the sometimes messy process of songwriting, a collection of songs begins to emerge, telling stories of love, loss, regret, redemption and the complicated road toward freedom.
The journey culminates in a live performance inside Folsom Prison, where the music returns to the very place that helped give it life. Not simply to remember what happened sixty years ago, but to discover what might happen next.
Johnny cash was and is the North Star, you could guide your ship by him.

outlaw spirit
THE BEST COUNTRY SONGS HAVE ALWAYS TOLD THE TRUTH.
Long before outlaw country had a name, it belonged to people who weren't particularly interested in singing what somebody else told them to sing. It was music born out of heartbreak, hard living, bad decisions and the stubborn belief that a person could still find something worth singing about.
That spirit is alive in this story. Bringing together contemporary outlaw songwriters and men living behind prison walls creates an opportunity for two very different worlds to find common ground through music. These aren't songs written from a distance about people nobody knows. They're songs shaped by the people who actually lived them.
We aren't interested in romanticizing crime or pretending every story has a happy ending. We're interested in what happens when people tell the truth, someone listens, and a guitar finds its way into the conversation.
the songwriting journey
At the heart of this film is a creative experiment: What happens when accomplished artists sit down with incarcerated men, listen to their lives, and begin writing songs together?
The film follows that process from beginning to end. A conversation becomes a lyric. A memory finds a melody. A story somebody hasn't spoken about in years becomes something they can finally sing about.
Some songs will be painful. Some might be funny. Others might reveal moments of grace in places nobody expected to find it. The idea isn't to force a message into the music. It's to give the stories enough room to become something honest.
Under the creative leadership of John Carter and Ana, the resulting songs form the musical foundation of the documentary, with the potential to become an original companion album featuring the participating artists and songwriters.
These aren't just songs about life inside Folsom. They're songs created from within it.
the performance
The place where it all began becomes the place where it all comes together.
The songwriting journey leads to a live performance inside Folsom State Prison, bringing John Carter, Ana, the next generation of outlaw artists and the original music together in a room that already holds an extraordinary place in American music history.
For the audience, the songs will mean something different because we've witnessed how they came to life. We've met the people behind the lyrics, watched the artists wrestle with the music, and experienced the relationships that made it possible.
The performance isn't a reenactment of 1968. It's the culmination of a new creative journey, one that honors the past without being confined by it.
And potentially, it becomes the beginning of something much bigger than a single night of music.
john carter and ana cristina cash
John Carter Cash knows better than most what it means to grow up surrounded by songs that changed the world. But he's spent decades building his own creative life as a producer, songwriter, author and artist. Ana Cristina Cash brings a powerful voice and musical identity of her own, making them a compelling partnership to lead this journey.
Johnny Cash's presence in this story is undeniable, but this isn't an attempt to recreate his concert. It's an opportunity for John Carter and Ana to carry forward the spirit of what made it matter while doing something distinctly their own.
emjae ross
Emjae Ross lived it himself- in and out of prison and rehab, selling drugs. One day after a cocaine binge, he suffered a massive stroke. He lost the ability to speak, walk, use his hands.
But in that brokenness, something unexpected happened- music became his therapy. He started writing songs, forcing his fingers around a guitar and something rewired.
Within ten months, he had fully recovered when the doctors said it would take years.
Ross now works with inmates to find their voice through songwriting. He’s experienced healing for himself in helping others find their own freedom through the power of music. He developed trauma-informed songwriting therapy curriculum, created for incarcerated and high-trauma populations.
The program is scalable for statewide and national correctional rollout with the goal of replicable rehabilitation and reentry intervention across the US correctional system.

NICK CAVE: ONE MORE TIME WITH FEELING (2016)
Originally a performance based concept, One More Time With Feeling evolved into something much more significant as director Andrew Dominik delved into the tragic backdrop of the writing and recording of the album. Interwoven throughout the Bad Seeds’ filmed performance of the new album are interviews and footage shot by Dominik, accompanied by Cave’s intermittent narration and improvised rumination. The result is stark, fragile and raw.
