Soul Stories: Incarceration Around The Globe
TRUE CRIME These are raw, gritty stories showcasing inmates from around the globe. The trauma and pain they’ve walked through. Their woundings: abandonment, shame, anger, addiction, loss, regret, numbness. Men and women who have lost their voice… as told by themselves.
Walk a mile in someone’s shoes and realize their story is our collective story. Pain is engrained in our own human nature and experience.
This series starts in the American penal system and then broadens out to Japan, Bali, England, South Africa, Uganda, Argentina, and Mexico- where specific deeper cultural woundings will be unearthed and explored.

FOLSOM ROOTS
Although Johnny Cash was never an inmate himself, he had empathy for prisoners. Maybe his own personal demons with addiction, drug abuse, erratic behavior, law enforcement run-ins would have eventually led him there.
Cash performed at Folsom Prison with a raw, gritty energy, that was well-received and became legendary.
He established how artists could connect with the socially excluded. It reflected the voice of the downtrodden. A voice for the voiceless.
what if there was a modern version of a live folsom prison performance?
cournerstone of soul
Soul music has always had African-American gospel traditions which powerfully preserved elements of cultural identity, survival, creativity, and resistance. Iconic soul music delightfully mixes call-and-response vocals with emotional delivery, rhythm & blues. Soul is a natural cornerstone of modern music.
Why does music unite us? Why do we resonate and feel it in our bones? Music throughout the ages has been a form of therapy, identity, and recovery.
science of soul
-Identify the universal patterns inhabited or ingrained with frequencies of sound (scale, intonations)
-Lean into the neuroscience of sound and what happens physically in our bodies when we play and interact with to music. How does the play into the process of healing and redemption?
-Explore parallel patterns in ancient history and historical spiritual practices? What was tapped into?
-Does music actually shift and influence our reality?
-More than just a mood setter, there is more to the mystery of sound to explore
-Mystery is an invitation to step into revelation
redemption of soul
Emjae Ross lived it himself- in and out of prison and rehab, selling drugs. One day after a cocaine binge, he suffered a massive stroke. He lost the ability to speak, walk, use his hands.
But in that brokenness, something unexpected happened- music became his therapy. He started writing songs, forcing his fingers around a guitar and something rewired.
Within ten months, he had fully recovered when the doctors said it would take years.
Ross now works with inmates to find their voice through songwriting. He’s found healing for himself in helping others find their own freedom through the power of music.
REFERENCE MEDIA
The series will be shot much like the 2006 Alejandro González Iñárritu film Babel. Babel interwove four different interconnecting stories that explored themes of miscommunication, cultural barriers, and the ripple effect of a single event. It ultimately showed our human connectedness and tapped into our deeper human condition. Each story within the film had it’s own look and feel.
SOFT WHITE UNDERBELLY (PODCAST)
Soft White Underbelly presents interviews and portraits the human condition.
BONO & EUGENE PETERSON: THE PSALMS
This short film documents the friendship between Bono (of the band U2) and Eugene Peterson (author of contemporary-language Bible translation The Message) revolving around their common interest in the Psalms.
