Soul Stories: Incarceration Around The Globe
CRIMINAL MINDS How did inmates get to where they are? Their raw, gritty, honest stories paint a picture of the human condition encompassing abandonment, shame, anger, addiction, loss, regret, and numbness. Where did unaddressed trauma and pain lead? What have they’ve walked through? Where were they wounded? Where are they stuck?
When we ‘Walk The Line’ and walk a mile in someone’s shoes, we realize their story is our story. Pain is engrained in our collective human nature and experience.
Our series begins in the American penal system and in sub-sequential seasons broadens out to Japan, Bali, England, South Africa, Uganda, Argentina, and Mexico. In each country specific deeper cultural issues are unearthed and explored.

FOLSOM ROOTS
Although Johnny Cash was never an inmate himself, he had empathy for prisoners. Maybe his own personal demons with addiction, drug abuse, erratic behavior, law enforcement run-ins would have eventually led him there.
Cash performed at Folsom Prison with a raw, gritty energy, that was well-received and became legendary.
He established how artists could connect with the socially excluded. It reflected the voice of the downtrodden. A voice for the voiceless.
what if there was a modern version of a live folsom prison performance?

Emjae Ross lived it himself- in and out of prison and rehab, selling drugs. One day after a cocaine binge, he suffered a massive stroke. He lost the ability to speak, walk, use his hands.
But in that brokenness, something unexpected happened- music became his therapy. He started writing songs, forcing his fingers around a guitar and something rewired.
Within ten months, he had fully recovered when the doctors said it would take years.
Ross now works with inmates to find their voice through songwriting. He’s experienced healing for himself in helping others find their own freedom through the power of music.
